Things to consider when selecting a nanny

If you are working parents and your close relatives are not able to care for your baby, you will need to find a nanny. This is not an easy process.

It is not easy to find someone who will satisfy your baby's needs and care for him for most of the day. You may worry since this person is likely to be a stranger. However, there are ways to manage this process. In this article in Mom’s Land, we’ve set out the the key things to consider while selecting a nanny:

- A nanny should be reliable and honest. Check the nanny’s references and contact the families for which she has worked.

- Other essential characteristics of a nanny are that she loves children and is patient.

- Nannies should know first aid, so that they can deal with accidents appropriately.

- Check that your nanny is healthy physically and psychologically, and does not have problems that could negatively influence your baby. For example, she should have high standards of personal care and hygiene.

- A nanny should be serious about responsibility and have good business ethics. She should manage time sufficiently and have appropriate experience in order to take care of your baby.

- It is important that your nanny does not smoke. Even if she does not smoke near your baby, tobacco smoke can linger and can still be harmful to your baby.

- Note that there are pros and cons to employing a young babysitter. They may adapt better to active children but may have less experience.

- It is important to find a nanny who shares your perspective on parenting. Otherwise, there may be a lack of harmony, which may influence your child negatively.

- If you are parents working long hours, and choose to employ a live-in nanny, ensure that she is given adequate time off. This will help avoid any undue stress that could negatively affect your child.

- Remember that babies and children need the interest of their parents the most. For that reason, babies who spend most of their time with a nanny, especially one that lives in, may become used to it and and feel alienated from their parents. Therefore, you need to spend as much time as possible with your baby. Your baby needs to be reassured that you will spend time with him/her after you come home.

- Take advice from friends and family when selecting a nanny, and choose a nanny who comes on recommendation, if possible.
